Lost Wax Brass Pendants

Each pendant is a mini-masterpiece. Imagine that each of this is first made entirely by hand out of wax. It is then cast using techniques that evolved millennia ago but are all but lost to the modern world. Because they are individually hand made sizes are approximate and models may differ slightly but we will do our best to match the photos.

FACT 1

Each pendants is first moulded out of beeswax. The wax is rolled into thin strips which are round wound into coils or woven into meshes - great skill is needed to create the detail.

FACT 2

The completed beeswax mould is covered with six layers of fine charcoal dust to preserve the detail and then coated wiith clay. When the mould has dried it is heated and the wax melts and runs out. Molten brass is then poured into the mould.

FACT 3

When the brass has cooled the mould is broken open revealing a brand new bead. The rough edges are filed off and the pendant is then polished using lemon juice and fine sand.

Tip - keeping your lost wax brass pendants shiny

To keep your pendants shiny and bright use brass polish and then wash in warm soapy water to remove the traces of the polish. Clean the grooves with an old toothbrush.

Recycled Glass Pendants

These colouruf fun pendants come in a wide variety of shaped and colours. What you see is just a small sample of the creativity of the bead artisans such as Kumah the creator of the Lizzy Bead line and Oklah Tetteh.
