Shawls

eShopAfrica.com | Wear |  Shawls

Welcome to Shawls

In this section you can find a wide range of traditional African shawls including kente shawls, mud cloth shawls, indigo dyed shawls and many more.

Kente Shawls

Wear this as an evening shawl - or folded on one shoulder West African style. They're also great for interior design to cover a table or chair. They are made from single strips of hand woven Kente which are machine sewn together. Some of the Kente cloths have borders of differing patterns. Others have the main pattern repeated across the whole cloth.

COLOURS: Please be aware that it is the patterns that are the focus of the weavers not the colours. Sometimes particular colour threads become unavailable and the weavers substitute a different colour. If the exact colour combinations is important to you please contact us before you place your order to assure availability.

Mud Cloth Shawls from Mali

Although it is popularly known as 'mud' cloth in fact these beautiful cloths use a wide variety of vegetable and minerals to produce their earthy tones. The West African cotton is hand-spun and woven on handlooms into strips about 3 inches wide. These are then sewn together to form one piece of cloth. At each end of the cloth there is a fringe the same colour as the background colour. These are hand made items and each one will differ slightly in size, design and colour. Patterns change over time, so these photos show types and styles.

The last two items are stencilled, many different patterns are availaable, if interested please send a query.

Fact - how black is made
To obtain black the cotton is boiled with leaves from two trees until it turns yellow and then buried in mud for a few days. The colour blue is from the indigo plant and other sources of colours include turmeric, kola nut, sorghum and henna.

Tip - washing Mali mud cloth

If you are going to wear mud cloth always wash it first to get rid of the excess dye. Wash by hand in cold water and dry flat. The first wash a lot of colour comes out - with each subsequent wash a small amount of colour comes out and fading can occur.
