In March 07 eShopAfrica were happy to welcome a group of Peace Corp volunteers and their counterparts to the office in Accra. Although the electricity was off for part of the time (a common problem these days) it was great to meet everyone and we look forward to staying in touch.

eShopAfrica joined Santa Clara University's Center for Science Technology and Society's Global Social Benefit Incubator Class of 2005 during the first two weeks of August. Social entrepreneurs were selected from all over the world and given intensive training from leaders in the field on how to scale up their ventures effectively and sustainably in order to benefit humanity. NAMIC eShopAfrica.com supplied Kente cloth bookmarks and Bolga Tanga baskets as gifts for for the 11th Anniversary Fundraiser of NAMIC (National Association For Multi-Ethnicity In Communications) held in New York in December 2005. The event was attended by a number of celebrities and major cable companies.

eShopAfrica finalist in "Global Junior Challenge"
Global Junior Challenge eShopAfrica was a finalist in the "Global Junior Challenge" a competition that is dedicated to all young people, from school children to teenagers and youths taking their first steps on the job market. It is open to cities, institutions, local authorities, businesses, NGOs, communities and individual citizens and all those who are interested or involved in child and youth education and training, and more broadly, in helping in the construction of a more inclusive society.
 
One of the aims of eShopAfrica is to put money and prestige back into the African artisan sector. Many of our artisans express a wish to be able to give their children a decent standard of living and education so that they remain with the family and inherit the skills instead of moving away to urban areas. eShopAfrica & Development Gateway
Development GatewayCordelia Salter-Nour, founder and webmaster of eShopAfrica.com was invited by the World Bank's Development Gateway to take part in a workshop held in Tanzania. The Tanzania Country Gateway who was hosting the event was focussing on the use of ICTs to promote SME development.
 
In a live video conference link between Rome, Washington and Dar El Salem, participants in the workshop in Tanzania listened first to a presentation on e-business by James Hanna of the World Bank's Private Sector Development Cluster for the Latin America and the Caribbean Region.
 
Following this Cordelia talked about the challenges and successes eShopAfrica has had in setting up an African based ecommerce web site. Practical issues such as credit card processing, fraud, shipping, customs and marketing were discussed. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session. Ghana Youth Exchange filming eShopAfrica artisans
A group of European students are visiting Ghana to make a film documentary on the aspirations of its population. They intend to explore the impacts of development programmess with a special focus on the field of fair trade and arts and crafts. Their initiative is supported by the International Youth Exchange Programme (IYEP-Ghana) and the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council (CYEC).
   eShopAfrica is putting the students in touch with some of our artisans and telling them about some of the challenges involved in running a fair trade website from Ghana. The resulting film will be shown to students in Europe to help raise awareness of the lives of ordinary Africans. Visit the Ghana Exchange website to find out more
 
Design Competition 04, Rome, Italy
AFRAM - FAOA total of 104 entries from three international schools in Rome were received. The entries were great!!! The judging and award ceremony was part of the Africa Week celebrations and was held at FAO in Rome in partnership with AFRAM. The ceremony was attended by Jenny Horrocks and featured in the BBC World Service Radio Programme Artbeat during the week of 3rd June 2004.
 
Exhibition of antique trade beads
Seven layered chevron Also as part of the Africa week celebrations, eShopAfrica put on an exhibition of antique trade beads collected in Africa. These beads tell a story of how African taste in beads fuelled the European bead industry challenging glass makers to new levels of creativity. Some of the beads on display were made in Venice over five hundred years ago. Cordelia Salter-Nour also made a presentation to accompany the bead exbibition. Find out more
 
Cordelia is looking for funding to make this display of beads into a touring exhibition to visit European schools to show them a more accurate view of the history of European trade with Africa.
 
Sustainable Resources 2003 Conference, Boulder, Colorado, USA
Sustainable Resources Trish Graham, eShopAfrica's Product Sourcer gave a presentation at the Sustainable Resources Conference 2003 called "Finding New Markets for Traditional Skills". The focus of this talk was the great variety and scope of beautiful arts and crafts there are in Africa and how these traditional skills can be brought to life again by finding them new markets. AITEC Africa A look at the reality of running an ecommerce website from Africa. Although ecommerce is supposed to offer big opportunities for Africa, the reality is very different. There are many barriers to entry for the African entrepreneur and many "old world" barriers still operate on the Internet.
